Your group chat has questions. Here’s the whole board, five sports on one page, plus what each injury means for the rest of us.

We have no connection with these athletes or teams and haven’t examined them. Everything here comes from public reports as of Friday, October 30, 2026, and status can change quickly.

NBA injuries: a broken leg, a torn arch and a bad ankle

Jalen Williams was fouled on a drive Oct. 25, landed awkwardly and left on a stretcher.[1] The Thunder said surgery repaired his fibula, the thin outer leg bone, and rebuilt his ankle ligaments.[2] Published numbers give a general picture, not a timeline for Williams: in a review of 1,422 athletes with ankle fractures, nearly 9 in 10 treated with surgery, 87.1% returned to sport, after a mean of 134.5 days. Worse fractures took longer.[47]

Paolo Banchero has a high ankle sprain, an injury to the ligaments joining the two lower-leg bones.[19,48]

Max Strus partly tore his plantar fascia, the thick band under the arch, in a preseason game.[21] In general numbers, not a forecast for him: among 18 athletes with plantar fascia ruptures treated with a boot and therapy, return took a mean of 9.1 weeks, and none needed surgery.[49] In a review of 155 patients, these ruptures were rare, most people had a prior plantar fasciitis diagnosis, and nonsurgical care usually worked.[50]

The lesson: Surgery can put back what an injury breaks. The Thunder said Williams’s operation repaired his fibula and rebuilt ligaments; how he recovers isn’t known yet.[2] And a sudden, sharp arch pain isn’t just heel pain. Get it looked at.

NFL injuries: Lamar Jackson’s ankle and the high ankle sprain

Lamar Jackson hasn’t played since Week 4.[25] The Ravens say he had three full practices this week, and Friday’s final report gave him no game designation.[23] ESPN reports a left high ankle sprain,[24] and coach Jesse Minter said Friday he’ll start Sunday against Buffalo.[25]

Packers center Sean Rhyan has one too, CBS reported.[29] In general, when a high ankle sprain leaves the ankle unstable, surgery is a real option.[48] In one review of elite athletes, not a forecast for either player, all 171 treated with surgery returned, in about seven weeks, versus about four weeks for those treated without it. Complications affected 9.1% of those with suture-button surgery, the most common type.[14]

Tyquan Thornton dislocated his left ankle and tore ligaments Oct. 4; the AP reported 12 to 16 weeks with surgery.[30] Davante Adams ruptured his hamstring without contact and faces six to 10 weeks.[51] Mike Evans left Oct. 19 with right Achilles soreness that his coach tied to tendinitis, an irritated tendon.[52] Edgerrin Cooper is still out for the year after the Achilles tear we covered Oct. 5.[53]

The lesson: An unstable ankle can still get back to sport after a repair: all 171 athletes in that review did, a general number, not a forecast for any player here.[14] And Achilles soreness isn’t a tear, but don’t guess. A quick calf-squeeze test picked up 96% of ruptures in one study.[54]

NHL injuries: the first read isn’t the final read

William Eklund was hit into the boards Oct. 8 and couldn’t put weight on his left leg.[8] A day later, his coach didn’t expect surgery.[55] On Oct. 14 he had surgery for a torn ankle tendon.[32,8] Reports haven’t named the tendon.

Kevin Fiala broke his lower left leg in several places at February’s Olympics, had surgery that month and a follow-up procedure in September, and practiced Oct. 29 in a noncontact jersey.[9,33]

The lesson: If you can’t bear weight, don’t assume it’s a sprain. The Ottawa Ankle Rules, a bedside check for who needs an X-ray, caught 99.4% of ankle fractures in pooled studies.[56] The right read keeps a repair on the table. A first read can change, too: Eklund went from no expected surgery to an operation and a reported 10-to-12-week timeline.[55,8]

MLB injuries: what the World Series taught us about feet and calves

The Brewers won their first title Oct. 28.[36] Rays star Junior Caminero left Game 4 limping with a left foot injury, then said, “Even if my foot is broken,” he’d play.[34] He batted in Game 5.[35]

Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski left the clincher after 5⅔ shutout innings with a right calf cramp and still got the win.[36] Cramps are treated with gentle stretching until they ease.[57] A calf strain is different: age and a past calf strain are the strongest predictors of a future one.[58]

The lesson: No surgery was reported here, and that’s the point of an exam. A cramp lets go. Calf or foot pain that stays needs a look, not a pep talk, because that’s how you find what a repair can fix.

Soccer injuries: Juventus, Real Madrid, Galatasaray and more

Kenan Yıldız had surgery Aug. 31 for a fracture at the base of his left fifth metatarsal, the long bone on the outer foot.[10] In general numbers, not a forecast for him, 45% of players with these fractures at European elite clubs had warning symptoms first, and 40% of fractures came in preseason. Fractures healed faster after surgery (75% vs. 33%), with similar time out (80 vs. 74 days).[59] No outlet we read has called his break a Jones fracture. For that related injury, 98.8% of athletes returned after screw fixation, vs. 71.6% without surgery, though about 10% of fractures broke again.[60]

At Real Madrid, Rodrygo is rehabbing after surgery for a torn right ACL, a key knee ligament.[11] Raúl Asencio’s stress fracture, a crack from repeated load, came in the tibia, or shin bone. After months of leg discomfort, nonsurgical care didn’t work, so he had surgery Oct. 1.[61,12]

Galatasaray’s Rafael Leão strained his groin Oct. 17 when his foot slipped, yet he was back playing in the Oct. 26 derby win over Fenerbahçe.[41,43] Fenerbahçe’s Marco Asensio had left knee cartilage surgery and faces about three months.[62] Arsenal is waiting on a follow-up scan of Bukayo Saka’s quad because fluid hid the extent of the injury.[44,45]

The lesson: Foot or shin pain that builds with training is a warning, not a test of toughness. When a bone won’t settle, surgery is a real option: the elite-club fractures above healed faster with it, a general number, not a forecast for any player.[59]

Why so many Achilles tears at the start of the NBA season?

Three right Achilles ruptures in 13 days: Ariel Hukporti Oct. 5, Otega Oweh Oct. 13, Ben Simmons Oct. 18, all before opening night.[3,4,5]

Does early season matter? In NFL games, 72.7% of Achilles ruptures in one eight-season review came in the first eight games,[63] and an older study put 19% in preseason.[64] But a review of 2010 to 2023 found season timing wasn’t statistically significant.[65] Three cases are a cluster, not proof, and no one has reported a shared cause.

What the data does show:

  • It’s often a misstep. In NFL games, 64% of ruptures were noncontact.[66] NBA video showed a false step in 95% of cases with footage.[16]
  • The calf may warn you. A past calf strain went with 2.49 times the odds of rupture, and 85.7% of players with both injuries had them on the same side.[16]
  • Recovery is long. Of 47 NBA players, 72.3% returned, with shorter careers than matched peers (3.1 vs. 5.8 seasons).[67]
  • Two recent cases, not data. Tyrese Haliburton came back after about 16 months, then strained a hamstring four games in. Brandon Ingram’s partial tear was found during May heel surgery, and he hasn’t played yet.[68,69,70]
  • It isn’t just a pro problem. In U.S. emergency-room data, sports and recreation caused 81.9% of Achilles ruptures, with basketball the most common cause.[71] From 2019 to 2024, men ages 20 to 39 had the highest risk.[72]

What this means for you

You don’t need a pro contract to tear an Achilles. At least 11 of the 21 athletes on our board reportedly had surgery.[2,5,3,4,6,7,8,9,10,11,12] In our sports medicine practice, Dr. Efe Ozturk, a Foot and Ankle Surgeon and podiatrist, starts with an exam, and seeing a surgeon early keeps that option open. With in-office X-ray and ultrasound, bone and tendon can often be checked in one visit. We arrange an MRI when needed. Dr. Ozturk performs Achilles tendon repair, ankle ligament reconstruction and fracture surgery, handled through our Center for Lower Extremity Surgery (external site).

We see patients at our Lyndhurst, Paramus and Millburn offices for Achilles tendon care, ankle sprains and fractures. Please call our office at 908-215-5953 to inquire about your insurance.

Common questions

What does a torn Achilles feel like?

You may hear a pop, then feel severe pain and swelling near the heel. You may not be able to stand on your toes.[73]

How long does a torn Achilles take to heal?

Complete recovery can take about 12 months, and some people need closer to two years.[73] NBA players in one study took a mean of 311 days to return.[74]

Do I need surgery for a torn Achilles?

Surgery’s big win is fewer re-tears: 0.6%, vs. 6.2% without surgery, in a trial of 554 adults. Function at 12 months was similar, and surgery brought more nerve injuries (2.8% to 5.2%, vs. 0.6%).[75]

How long does a high ankle sprain take?

Elite athletes averaged about four weeks without surgery and seven with it.[14] Severe sprains in general may take 6 to 12 weeks.[48]
